BYU Employees Bless Student Workers
In 2010 Physical Facilities vice president Ole Smith decided to offer his staff an opportunity to designate Employee Giving contributions for scholarships that would go to students working within the division. The idea originated years before when a Physical Facilities employee expressed an interest in supporting students from his department, many of whom were struggling with finances.
The result? Not only did the overall employee participation increase by 5 percent, the donations provided 10 new $1,000 scholarships for students working with Physical Facilities.
Ole says it was a rewarding experience: “When we called in the students to let them know of their scholarships, it was immediately apparent how grateful they were. Some were emotional to the point of tears. It was quite a touching moment for me, too. Our experience has motivated us to work toward increasing the number of scholarships we award each year. In the future we want every shop and area within Physical Facilities to provide a student scholarship. What a difference that would make!”
